Saturday afternoon, I joined Cate at Plaza de Mayo and enjoyed the beautiful afternoon at the Gay Pride Faire & and then watched the Gay Pride Parade - _[Marcha del Orgullo XVII][5]_. The ambiance reminded me of San Francisco, but the event was much smaller in scale. There was still a solid turnout. I was able to take a bunch of photos and narrowed it down to [45 that I just put up on flickr][6]. Please click through, but note that they are not all work-safe (just exposed breasts and [one perfect ass][7]). There were a ton of costumes and the drag was pretty impressive. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence have a chapter in Uruguay _(Hermanas de la Perpetua Indulgencia)_ and they made [a good showing][8]! I had no idea they were international. The Plaza was full of booths, a stage was set up with musicians and people were enjoying themselves, the beautiful sunny weather and the open atmosphere. There was an overt political mission to this all, which was getting more rights recognized for LGBT folk including [Gay Marriage][9]. I know that pride events in San Fran have a political tinge, but this was much more strident and overt in a good way. Lots of banners and flyers and vocalizations.  
  
Towards 6 pm, I walked down Av de Mayo to stake out a place from which to shoot and ended up sitting on a concrete block next to the Peru subte stop on the A-line. I had a pretty good vantage point and struck up a conversation with Alberto - a photojournalist with La Nacion - and his girlfriend? Nelida. Kragen eventually joined me and we watched the parade pass by once it eventually started 1 1/2 hours late at 7:30. Everyone seemed to have a great time, dancing, singing, being silly and sometimes serious as well. It gave me a small hit of the Bay Area and I saw some expats there. There was even a guy holding up [an Obama-Biden sign][10]. Keep your fingers crossed for Tuesday folks. California peeps - remember to vote NO on Prop 8. Don't take away rights - that's the silliest/meanest thing ever.
