1. In [an article in the Sydney Morning Herald][1], the "International Telecommunication Union" said that the cable outages might be the result of sabotage. "'We do not want to preempt the results of ongoing investigations, but we do not rule out that a deliberate act of sabotage caused the damage to the undersea cables over two weeks ago,' the UN agency's head of development, Sami al-Murshed, told AFP."
...
"'Some experts doubt the prevailing view that the cables were cut by accident, especially as the cables lie at great depths under the sea and are not passed over by ships,' Murshed said on the sidelines of a conference on cyber-crime held in Gulf state of Qatar." Kragen rightly points out that indeed they are passed over by ships, but the cables are just too deep for it to matter. I chalk the confusion of the language up to the fact that English probably isn't his first language and people are hardly precise in speaking and writing.
2. We are very grateful to my parents for taking care of Slink; she will live out her days on the farm in Bolinas. We will look for cats here. We're hoping for two sisters. The hostel gave away the kittens we were interested in. Unfortunately, I'm thinking that they got rid of them way too early. I would use impolite words to describe them and their actions, but I think you can all understand how I feel about that.
