As a follow up to my [prior post][1], it looks like I'll have to rebuild from my backup. Someone did write [an application to help with backups of photo-libraries][2], so I've downloaded that for the future.  
  
I was pointed to some forums and I guess there's company in misery, but knowing I'm not the only one who has this problem doesn't inspire confidence. But, I think the main problem is that my hard drive is going bad (there's at least one "bad spot". Hopefully I can get it fixed (with an upgrade to a bigger one) in Buenos Aires. Stupid computers...
