Over the past three years, since I've started getting into Social Networking sites, I've filled out a lot of "interest forms". I've filled them out on [Livejournal], [Flickr], [Friendster], [Tribe], [Orkut], [LinkedIn], [Couchsurfing], [Hospitality Club] and even [Evite]. Why is it that these sites, which are WEBsites, on the World Wide Web, don't ask you about your favorite sites (for the most part)? Instead, they ask about Books, Authors, Movies, Actors, Directors, Music and Artists. Ummm - how about asking about your favorite websites? I know in Livejournal, you can add a set of links, but really, shouldn't these sites be asking about the web too? Hasn't that hit pop-culture level of awareness yet?
It is also a lot of information to keep current in a lot of different places. I notice that I'm still an employee of the Internet Archive in some of these places. I need to update that! I think I'm going to delete some of these accounts. Orkut comes to mind as all I ever get from them is spam from users, which is highly annoying.
What, if any, social networking sites do you use? Why? Do you like them? Do you actually find you stay in touch with people, or do you sign up and then forget about your account until you get an email from them?
