So Beatrice and I are on her vacation.
Sunday, we spent some time with Stig Hackvan, who has some interesting
ideas about how to make writing free software more financially
appealing.
We went up to Harbin Hot Springs for a couple of days, camped out in a
big meadow full of dry grass near an outhouse, swam around naked with
lots of other people, and ran into an old friend of hers, someone she
hadn't seen in 18 years. Coincidentally, said old friend happens to
know Stig too.
Then we went out to her folks' place to take care of it for the night.
They have 20 chickens; the coop blew shut before nightfall, so the
chickens went to roost in the redwoods, under the coop, and other
places. We spent a while chasing them down, climbing up and down
redwood trees carrying roosters, yelling and banging under the coop,
and generally having good old farm fun.
I have an article on a particular class of bug to turn in a first
draft of on Monday. It'll be the first time anybody's paid me to
write an article.
Went to Bab5 tonight and chatted far too briefly with lots of folks
doing interesting stuff. Pretty fireworks too.
The "replacement" power supply from Radio Shack is serving very
poorly. It simply can't provide enough current to charge the battery
when it's low; at lower voltage settings, it can run the computer
(although I have the occasional trouble with peripherals!) but doesn't
charge the battery. At more correct voltage settings, its overcurrent
protection turns it off unless the battery is mostly charged.
A big 2-ohm, 10-watt resistor and heatsink would probably solve the
problem. So would a compatible power supply. Maybe I should just buy
a bunch of obsolete laptops...
