I did get that new laptop on Saturday. It's a Toshiba Tecra 8000; I
put an account of my sufferings with it at
http://pobox.com/~kragen/tecra8k.html --- I'm very happy with it so
far.
I'm kind of sick; Sunday night, I got a bit of a sore throat; Monday,
I developed a low fever and a stuffy head; Tuesday, the fever got
higher and my chest got congested. Wednesday morning, I'm coughing up
lots of sputum and having trouble with sinuses and eustachian tubes,
but the fever seems to be gone for now.
Today is Wednesday, and I'm on a (ATA, formerly ValuJet) plane to
Dayton. I'm staying in Dayton for a week, then returning; I'm
preparing my house there to sell. I don't yet know what needs to be
done there, but I'll find out.
I unfortunately have to endure a movie on the flight. At least I
don't have to listen to it. But the flight attendants asked people to
close their window shades so people can watch it. I don't know about
my fellow travelers, but I'd much rather be able to see real mountains
and clouds than a TV set.
I got up this morning at 4:00. Beatrice drove me to the airport.
I took some pseudoephedrine at the airport. My ears are just barely
equalizing pressure as the plane climbs; perhaps I should have taken
more. I'm glad I'm wearing earplugs.
I've been selected for jury duty (in San Francisco) next month.
Bloody Mary mix (2070 mg of sodium) and ginger ale on the plane. "I'm
sorry, we can't give you two cans," says the ancient flight attendant.
Oh well. You fly bargain basement, you take what you can get.
Looking forward to seeing Canonical Hackers in Dayton.
My laptop took almost exactly two and a half hours (on one battery)
from being unplugged to crapping out on the airplane. Bizarrely,
there was no outlet in the plane's bathroom.

Midway airport has concourses A, B, C, D, E, F, G. My flight from San
Francisco arrived at the far end of concourse G; my flight to Dayton
departs from the far end of concourse A. I wasn't feeling bad at all
until I walked from one end of the airport to the other. Now I don't
feel so great.
There's snow on the ground outside the airport. It was sunny earlier,
but now it's clouding up a bit.
For some reason, people waiting in airports never look very happy.
Midway airport has very bad Sprint PCS coverage. I'm generally
appalled at how bad Sprint PCS coverage is.

Last month, I switched from 1000 anytime cellphone minutes per month
to 200 minutes plus 3800 night and weekend minutes. I've been using
about 10 minutes a day, which needs to stop or I'll end up paying $90
instead of $50 for my next month of service.
