They didn't have to kill the Ewoks, though.  The Ewoks weren't
inherently evil and in need of immediate destruction, although they did
nasty things to our little rebel band.

No, it's a question of having a large portion of the Master Sith Lord's
world line outside of the light cones of the apprentice Sith Lord's
death event.  Like several years of it -- probably several centuries
most of the time.
